Admission to the Graduate Program (MA and PhD)

 

MA Communication (MA Comm) Applicants

Prospective students to the MA Comm program mst have a GWA of 2.00 or better from his/her Bachelor's degree if the degree was earned from UP or 2.0 or better if the degree was earned from another institution of higher learning. 

MA Media Studies (MA MS) Applicants

Prospective students in MA MS Broadcast Communication must have obtained an average of 2.0 or better from his/her Bachelor's degree. S/he must have either a Bachelor's degree in Broadcasting or Journalism, or a related discipline.

Prospective students in MA MS Journalism must have obtained an average of 2.0 or better from his/her Bachelor's degree. S/he must have either a Bachelor's degree in Journalism or a media-related field.

An applicant who would like to specialize in Film must have an average of 2.25 or better from his/her Bachelor's degree.

PhD in Communication and PhD in Media Studies

An applicant to the College's PhD program must have a Master's degree from a recognized institution of higher learning. A general weighted average of 1.75 or higher in the Master's studies is required of PhD applicants.

The applicant should exemplify a very high degree of accomplishment in the desired field of study and must pass a series of in-depth interviews to be conducted by a distinguished panel of PhD faculty of the College. Moreover, the applicant must pass a written admission examination to be administered by a PhD faculty committee to be constituted by the Dean. 

An applicant must show proof of proficiency in English and/pr Filipino. Foreign applicants who obtained theeir Master's degree abroad must show proof that they passed the Test of English as Foreign LAnguage or TOEFL with a minimum sore of 500 or 250 in the computer-based TOEFL.

International Students

Prospective students who obtained their MA degrees abroad must show proof that they passed the Standard Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) wih a minimum score of 500 (paper-based exam) or 250 in the TOEFL iBT.

An applicant admitted to the PhD program who obtained their Master's degree abroad are required to take six (6) units of Filipino language courses as an additional requirement to be taken during the First Year of enrollment or they must show proof of proficiency in the Filipino language. 

Admission Requirements:
  1. Application for admission duly accomplished FORM
  2. Letter of application addressed to the Dean of the College
  3. Official transcript of undergraduate or graduate records (original and photocopy)
  4. Diploma of undergraduate and / or graduate (original and photocopy)
  5. Two (2) 2x2 inch picture
  6. Certified true copy of the birth certificate (original and photocopy)
  7. A Photocopy of marriage contract (for married women only)
  8. Three (3) recommendations for admission duly filled out by competent individuals who are in the best position to assess applicant's potential for graduate work.
  9. TOEFL ( for foreign applicants only)
  10. A non-refundable application fee of P200 or US $50 for foreign applicants

Pleas pay the application fee of at the Cashier's Office before you submit your documents and accomplished application form to the Graduate Studies Department Office (GSD) located on the ground floor, right wing of the Annex Building of the College of Mass Communication.
