21st Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop announces call for fellows

The Journalism Department of the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines, is once again calling for applicants to the Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop. The deadline for submission of applications is on May 22, 2017.

With the theme, “Science Journalism: Contextualizing Science Reporting for Communities in Mindanao,” the four-day workshop will be held from July 3-7, 2017 in Davao City.

Journalism faculty from the College of Mass Communication, University of the Philippines Diliman will join scientists from UP Mindanao to serve as trainers and resource speakers. UP President Danilo L. Concepcion, together with other scientists from UP Mindanao, will hold a media briefing on July 6, 2017.

Funded through the Communicating Science and Technology Research and Development at the University of the Philippines (CoST-UP), an Emerging Interdisciplinary Research (EIDR) program of the UP System, the workshop aims to train 25 to 30 journalists and regional science information officers from Mindanao.

Full fellowship is available to journalists while partial fellowship is available to regional science information officers to cover only workshop materials, food and accommodation.

Applicants should be currently engaged in media or employed as government science information officers. They must submit (1) an application letter or letter of intent; (2) brief biographical sketch, (3) a 2x2 mug shot; (4) a published/broadcast news or feature story; and (5) a letter of endorsement from anyone of the following: applicant’s editor or supervisor, local press club head, or a Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop alumnus/alumna.

The Lopez Jaena Community Journalism Workshop is a flagship project of the Journalism Department. Since its first workshop in 1985, it has already trained hundreds of community journalists from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
