Special Screening of Requiem by Kiri Dalena at the Plaridel Hall Lobby

17 - 29 November 2011
Lobby, Plaridel Hall
College of Mass Communications
University of the Philippines
Ylanan Road, Diliman, Quezon City

As a satellite exhibition to Kiri Dalena’s solo show Time and Place of Incident at Vargas Museum,
Requiem also centers on the killing of media journalists. It utilizes the artist’s long-term project in which
she and volunteers photograph and video grave sites of journalists killed in extrajudicial circumstances.
Requiem also makes use of documentation taken by the artist shortly after the Maguindanao massacre,
poetically conveying futile wishes to undo the events of the tragedy. Showing two videos produced
through grants from ANC, Requiem expresses the issue through a single-channel medium while Time
and Place of Incident shows the possibilities of space and installation using multiple projections.

Memorial for Filipino Journalists, 2011, single-channel video , 7 min. 16 sec.

Memorial for Filipino Journalists features stills and videos of grave sites of killed media journalists
throughout the Philippines, taken by the artist as well as volunteers. The video simultaneously shows
neglect and concern amidst a staggering accumulation of graves, underscoring the solemnity and
severity in the issue of media killings.

Requiem for M, 2010, single-channel video, 6 min. 52 sec.

Requiem for M is an experimental short documentary in the aftermath of the Maguindanao massacre
in which multiple journalists were slain. Dalena captured scenes from the funerals and played this in
reverse, in the wistful yearning to turn back time to before the tragedy occurred.
